Bauer rig helps Swiss tunnel construction.

Bauer Sezialtiefbau Schweiz has used Bauer BG 40 and BG 28 rotary drilling rigs to construct secant bored pile retaining walls for an excavation pit near a new tunnel in Switzerland. A total of 362 piles of 1000 mm diameter were drilled to depths of up to 31 m. The walls were anchored back with up to four levels of anchors. The work was carried out in the period January to May 2007.

The client for this tunnel construction, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010, is the Canton of Tessin. The City of Lugano in the south of Switzerland, is experiencing considerable problems with the volume of traffic approaching daily from the north, via the motorway. A new 2.63 km-long Vedeggio-Casserate road tunnel under the Trevano Hill is intended to alleviate traffic problems.

During the construction works the contractor had to face two artesian groundwater horizons resulting in significant artesian pressures. In addition, boulders up to 4 m in diameter had to be drilled through at depths between 20 and 28 m.
